This cabin is designed with focus on wood and sustainability as an all-year retreat on the island Gällnö in the Stockholm archipelago.
Gällnö is reached only by boat and has no car traffic nor municipal water and sewage. The houses are self sufficient with it´s own water well, treatment plant, roof-mounted solar panels and wood-burning stoves.
Two single-storey cabins – a main building and a studio/guesthouse are raised on plinths which are adapted to the topography to reduce impact on the sites vegetation and to fit well within the natural environment. The buildings are placed together as a L-shape and are connected with a roof covered outdoor area. The layouts are focused on the views - the close sea to the north, meadows and sea to the east and the inland forrest to the west. Surrounding oak, pine and birch trees are kept as many and close as possible.
The internal structure in cross laminated timber was chosen for it´s sustainability, structural strength and for quick and dry construction time on site. And also for it´s beautiful warm-toned palette throughout the interior, minimizing the use of other materials.
